Donate Your Car – Change a Life – Receive a Tax Break

Brenda B. had a car but the transmission blew and she could not afford to fix it or get another car. Brenda’s two girls, ages 4 and 6, attended daycare and school while she worked as a waitress. Also, Brenda was going to a community college to get her associate’s degree in Nursing. After losing her car Brenda was unable to get her children to daycare and to get to her work, much less continue classes. Her only option was to go on public assistance.

Brenda was referred to the Good News Mountaineer Garage (GNMG) where she received a donated Subaru Legacy. The Subaru had 110,000 miles on it and was donated by a retired teacher. This car allowed her to keep her existing job and continue her education. Also she can take her children to after school activities, to the doctor, and to church and community events.

Initially the GNMG was housed in the WV Council of Churches. Now it is a WV non-profit organization and the Council of Churches is still an active participant and supporter of this needed service. The GNMG plays an important role in getting low income West Virginians back on the road to work, school, or training program by providing them with reliable transportation.

Instead of trading in or selling your used vehicle, consider donating it to the Good News Mountaineer Garage. It’s an opportunity to help a struggling family and there are substantial tax benefits for the donors too. Car donors receive the maximum allowable federal income tax deduction and, when applicable, West Virginia’s income tax credits.
